Winterwood Donkey Stud is located in the Gold Coast Hinterland, South East Queensland, Australia.
All of our donkeys have been hand selected for temperament, conformation, colour and breeding from leading breeders in the United States and Canada. Winterwood's herd consists of only 100% pure American Mediterranean Miniature Donkeys (AMMDs). This careful selection of our foundation stock will be the basis of top quality future AMMDs.
AMMDs have pure bloodlines that extend to the original imports from Corsica and Sardinia to the United States in the 1930s. Pedigrees have been kept on all true AMMDs. The Donkey All Breeds Society of Australia has a register devoted to AMMDs., as does the American Donkey and Mule Society.
All miniature donkeys are not the same. For example, the English and Irish donkeys differ from the Mediterranean breed, however all miniatures must be under 36" at the withers. Cross breeding between the different types has occurred, resulting in a loss of the pure features of each breed.
Along with other breeders in Australia and NZ, we intend to foster and preserve the pure line of AMMDs.
All Winterwood Donkeys are registered with the American Donkey and Mule Society (ADMS).
